Music has always been this enormous entity that is filled to the brim with the bourgeois entitlement and high-handedness that comes on cue when the word “Art” is thrown around. In the old world we had only the true aristocrats playing “civilized music”, while all other forms of music has been seen as “other” by the high class. But with the advent of the internet there is no barrier for entry aside from your own personal ability to search for anything your heart desires. No longer do you have to go to an overly-expensive classical symphony just to hear the works of greats like Beethoven, Vivaldi, and Chopin; you can sit in your underpants in front of your computer or similar device and rock out.

This also opens up the world to hear music produced by independent artists that are just sitting in their living rooms. The accessibility of high-quality recording microphones and the processing power of computers you can have a whole studio right in your basement for a mere fraction of a fraction of the cost of renting out time at a “real studio”. And you can gain real world technical knowledge about how to operate equipment, mix tracks, and release your own music.

That’s another HUGE thing about music in the internet age- you don’t have to go through a label to have your music heard by the masses. With the prevalence of social media you can promote your own stuff on Twitter, Facebook, Soundcloud, Tumblr, 4chan, and the list goes on and on.

Art should always be for the common man and now that is truly a possibility in the age of the internet. Give Youtube a good look around and you’ll see that this is so true. There are so many talented people who wouldn’t have this opportunity in any other time are getting their shot at the spotlight. Truly it is a wonderful time to be alive.
